Description: An LP of contemporary pop songs recorded over a 5 year period between 2008 and 2013.
Notes: 2008 was a very bad year for me in every possible way! Needless to say this is where One More For the Void started with the song "In the Night". It was only the intro that I built up at that time, and finally three years later in 2011 the other parts of that song would be written. It wouldn't be until 2012 that the final arrangement was made swapping verses for choruses etc.
The writing for the album picked up a bit more in 2009 with early versions of "This Far Gone", "Imitation of Life", and "Early Autumn". I wish I would have saved copies of those early versions instead of building and changing them over time. The only songs which were completely started over were "In the Night" and "Imitation of Life" which ended up on Dem O's. At this time in 2009 I still wasn't looking to bring back my solo project and so there was no motivation to build up an album of any kind. Probably explains why things moved really slow with this one!
By the end of 2011 things were really picking up with the album writing and recording. Originally it was going to be called "Absurdities" featuring a 50's style album cover. The big problem was the fact that I was still going slow enough to second guess what I was doing. A lot of songs would be tossed aside because of this. In the following year of 2012 things stalled once again and the album was shelved in favor of re-recordings of past works like 96 Soundtrack, Old World, and Primal Distortions.
Finally in the winter and spring of 2013 I had a few new songs arrive which recharged the new album project! First was "Heaven and Earth" written in the winter, followed by "Walk Away", and "Forget Me" written in the spring. I decided to ditch the original title and cover concept for one which more closely matched my growing sentiment. This was supposed to be my last album and so I felt like so many times before this was just one more album that I was releasing into the void. I always joke about having retired from music more times than Robert Smith from The Cure.
Once the album was released in late May of 2013 there was actually a bit of sales and song plays over in Europe! It was nothing to write home about, but it did change my mind about quitting, at least for a short while. I'm sure most of those individuals have since drifted off and forgotten about me already. I get it, I'm not marketing myself as "Loud Flashy Bright Person!"... There's something so forgettable about "just some guy who does music out of the home"... I get it. I was never good at grabbing heads and smashing them into my music in such an aggressive manner. When it comes to music marketing these days it seems like that needs to be the approach.
